WHAT ARE THE TWO MAIN TYPES OF CYLINDER LINERS
Dry Liners
Dry liners have a flange on top and are formed like a barrel. The flange secures the liner into the cylinder block. The liner fits inside the cylinder exactly. Excellent contact between the cylinder block and liner is necessary for the liner to cool efficiently. Additionally, during combustion, the combined thickness of the cylinder and liner resists impact loads, piston thrust, and gas pressure.
Dry liners are hence thinner and typically used to restore damaged liners. They have walls that are 1.5 mm to 3 mm thick. The cooling water and the dry liners do not come into direct contact with one another.
Wet Liners:
The fact that cooling water comes into contact with the liner gives rise to the moniker “wet liner.” This liner’s top features a flange that fits into the cylinder block’s groove. In order to stop cooling water leaks in the crankcase, sealing rings or packing rings are utilised to seal the bottom end of the wet liner. Because the wet liner must withstand thrust, impact, and gas pressure, its wall thickness is greater than that of the dry liner.
The wall thickness of the wet liner usually ranges from 3 to 6 mm to prevent corrosion, an aluminium coating is applied to the liner’s outside.
